Nervous System Overactivation
The most fundamental contributor to insomnia is a nervous system that cannot shift from sympathetic activation to parasympathetic recovery. This is the fight-or-flight versus rest-and-digest distinction. Spinal tension, pain, and chronic stress all maintain sympathetic dominance and make it physiologically difficult for the body to enter the relaxed state sleep requires.
Spinal Misalignment and Nerve Irritation
Misalignment in the cervical and thoracic spine creates mechanical stress on the nervous system. That stress is continuous and low-grade. It keeps the nervous system in a state of alert that competes directly with the conditions sleep requires. Many people with chronic insomnia have significant spinal tension they are not consciously aware of.
Chronic Pain
Back pain, neck pain, headaches, and joint discomfort are among the most common causes of disrupted sleep. Pain activates the nervous system and makes it physically difficult to find a comfortable position and stay there through the night. Even pain that is mild during the day often intensifies when the body is still and horizontal.
Elevated Cortisol
Cortisol follows a daily rhythm. It should be high in the morning and low at night. Chronic stress, physical tension, and nervous system dysregulation disrupt that rhythm. When cortisol is elevated at bedtime, the body cannot make the hormonal shift that supports sleep onset.
Disrupted Melatonin Production
Melatonin signals the body that it is time to sleep. Its production is regulated by the nervous system and influenced by light exposure, stress, and the overall state of nervous system balance. When the nervous system is dysregulated, melatonin production is often dysregulated with it.
Poor Posture and Structural Tension
Forward head posture and thoracic restriction create physical tension that the body carries into the night. Sleeping with a misaligned spine increases discomfort, disrupts breathing mechanics, and contributes to the restlessness and frequent waking that characterize chronic insomnia.
Dysregulated Brainwave Patterns
The brain transitions through specific wave states during healthy sleep. When the nervous system is chronically stressed, those transitions become disrupted. The brain may struggle to slow down from beta activity into the alpha and theta states that precede deep sleep. This is a neurological pattern that can be directly addressed through neurofeedback.
